GPWS – Ground Proximity Warning System

GPWS is a specialized avionics system that accurately detects an aircraft’s distance from the earth’s surface to provide an alert when the aircraft is getting too close to obstacles such as terrain, towers or other aircraft. The system provides location data to the pilot to give them a good understanding of the aircraft’s position relative to the ground, thereby providing limited predictability about the aircraft’s position in relation to rising terrain. This helps pilots avoid collisions with the ground and other obstacles, ensuring a safe and smooth flight for all aboard. The system comprises a radar altimeter and a computer, and the data picked up is used to trigger an alarm or warning to the pilot, who can take timely action to avoid a collision and stay on course.
