Handshake in Computer Networking

Handshake in computer networking refers to the initial exchange of information between two devices or computers to establish a connection and synchronize settings before exchanging data or messages. This process is essential to ensure the successful transfer of information and establish a reliable communication channel.

Typically, the handshake involves a series of messages or packets exchanged between devices to negotiate parameters such as data transmission rates, encryption keys, error correction protocols, and other essential settings. The handshake process also includes a verification step to authenticate the identity of the devices and ensure the security of the communication.

In the context of aeronautical satellite communication (SATCOM) systems, the handshake process occurs when the aircraft and the satellite exchange log-on requests, also called ‘pings,’ to establish a connection. This allows the aircraft to transmit messages from the cockpit or automated messages from onboard systems. The handshake is a crucial step in ensuring the reliable transmission of important information in the aviation industry.
