Height above airport (HAA)

« Back to Glossary Index

Height Above Airport (HAA) refers to the height of the Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) above the published elevation of the airport. It is an important parameter in aviation that helps pilots determine the minimum altitude they can descend to when approaching the destination airport. HAA is calculated by adding the MDA to the airport elevation, which provides pilots with an accurate representation of their vertical position relative to the airport surface. In other words, HAA assists pilots in maintaining a safe and precise glide path during their final approach to the runway. The accuracy and precision of HAA measurements play a critical role in ensuring the safety of aircraft operations, especially during low visibility conditions such as fog, rain, or snow. Pilots must be aware of the HAA and adhere to its limitations to avoid any potential collision or accident.
