IDT

« Back to Glossary Index

The IDT, or “ident” feature of a transponder, is an abbreviation used to refer to the capability of a transponder to broadcast a unique identification code to aircraft surveillance systems. This IDT signal is used by air traffic control and other aircraft monitoring systems to identify and track the location and movement of aircraft in flight. The IDT code is transmitted as part of the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) system, which is a critical component of modern air traffic control systems. The IDT code is programmed into the transponder by the aircraft operator or owner, and is unique to each individual aircraft. This code can be used to differentiate between multiple aircraft operating in the same airspace, and helps ensure the safety and efficiency of air traffic management.
