Definition of “Initial Approach Fix (IAF)

An Initial Approach Fix (IAF) is a point on an Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP) chart where the approach begins, unless otherwise directed by Air Traffic Control (ATC). This point is depicted on the chart and serves as a navigational reference for pilots to begin their approach to the destination airport.

The IAF is typically located at a certain distance from the airport and can be either a radio navigation aid or a visual reference point. Pilots must initiate their descent towards the runways using the IAF as a starting point and following the prescribed course until reaching the final approach phase.

The IAF is an essential element of the IAP chart and helps pilots navigate safely and accurately towards the destination airport. It is important to note that ATC may authorize pilots to use a different initial approach point depending on the specific circumstances of the flight, such as traffic congestion or weather conditions.
