Jump Seat

« Back to Glossary Index

Jump Seat: an additional seat located within the cockpit of an aircraft designated for use by non-piloting crew members or trainees. The Jump Seat is typically located behind the pilot’s and co-pilot’s seats. It allows for essential personnel such as cabin crew or trainees to observe the flight operations and gain a better understanding of the aircraft’s workings. Beyond providing a vantage point to observe the flight deck, the Jump Seat is integral for safety reasons. In case of an unforeseen event, the occupant of the Jump Seat can assist the pilot or co-pilot with necessary procedures such as communicating with air traffic control or performing emergency drills. The terms and regulations for using the Jump Seat vary by airline and are strictly enforced in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines.
