Kollsman window

« Back to Glossary Index

Kollsman Window: a transparent window on an altimeter that displays a barometric scale used to adjust the altitude reading based on the atmospheric pressure at the aircraft’s current location. This allows for more accurate altitude measurements and helps to ensure safe navigation during flights. The window is named after Paul Kollsman, an aviation pioneer who invented the altimeter in 1928. Today, Kollsman windows are commonly found on aircraft and are an important tool for pilots to use in maintaining the appropriate altitude during flight.
