Lateral axis

« Back to Glossary Index

The Lateral Axis of an aircraft is an imaginary line that passes horizontally through the center of gravity of the plane, and runs from wingtip to wingtip. This axis is responsible for the plane’s lateral movements and is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, which runs from nose to tail. The lateral axis enables the plane to pitch, or rotate vertically, about this axis. This axis affects the aircraft’s roll and bank movements, as well as its stability during flight. Proper understanding of the lateral axis is essential for pilots to safely and accurately control the aircraft’s movements.
