Lighter-than-air craft (LTA craft)

« Back to Glossary Index

LTA Craft: A classification of aerial vehicles that are designed to be lighter-than-air, meaning that they have the ability to float in the sky without the need for lift produced by wings or rotors, unlike heavier-than-air craft such as airplanes and helicopters. Common examples of LTA craft include blimps, dirigibles, and free balloons. These vehicles typically utilize gases such as helium or hydrogen to achieve buoyancy and control their altitude and movement. LTA craft have a long history of use in various applications, including military surveillance, scientific research, advertising, and recreational activities. Despite their slower speed and lower payload capacity compared to other aircraft, LTA craft remain a viable option for certain missions, thanks to their ability to hover and stay stationary in the air for extended periods of time.
