Definition of MEF

MEF, an acronym for Maximum Elevation Figure, refers to the highest point within a defined area that an aircraft can safely fly without the risk of colliding with an obstacle. It is represented on charts as a number, indicating the altitude in feet above mean sea level.

The MEF takes into account all the natural and man-made obstacles in an area such as hills, mountains, buildings, power lines, and bridges. Pilots use MEFs as a critical safety consideration when planning their flight routes, particularly during takeoff and landing or when flying in mountainous or non-urban areas.

In summary, MEF is a critical safety measure in aviation, ensuring that aircraft can fly within a designated altitude without encountering obstacles. Its importance cannot be overstated, and pilots must be familiar with MEFs when planning their flights.
