monocoque

« Back to Glossary Index

Monocoque: A design concept for objects such as wings or fuselages where the outer skin supports the majority of imposed stresses without the need for an internal frame. This design’s outer skin acts as a structural shell that can support heavy loads. Monocoque design may include bulkheads but does not require stringers. This shell-like fuselage design allows for weight savings and increased structural integrity as there are no internal frames creating additional weight. The monocoque concept can be found in many different structures, including aircraft, cars, and even bicycle frames. Its use in these applications is due in part to its ability to handle high stresses while maintaining a lightweight design, making it a popular choice for engineers and designers in various industries.
