N1

« Back to Glossary Index

N1 – the rotational speed of the low-pressure compressor in a gas turbine engine, which plays a critical role in powering the aircraft. This speed is measured as a percentage of the maximum design speed for the engine, and is a key indicator of the overall engine performance. The N1 value is used in combination with other engine parameters to maintain the desired thrust level and ensure optimal operating conditions. A higher N1 value generally corresponds to a greater power output, but it must be carefully balanced against other factors such as fuel consumption, engine wear, and environmental considerations. Overall, monitoring and controlling N1 is essential for safe and efficient aircraft operation.
