Definition of Obstruction Lights

Obstruction lights are lighting devices that are utilized to indicate the presence of potential obstructions in the vicinity. They are commonly found in areas that require enhanced visibility of potential obstacles, such as the area around airports, telecommunications towers, and structures exceeding a certain height.

These lights may be red, white, or orange in color and are intended to provide a visual cue to pilots, air traffic controllers, and others who might encounter these obstructions. On airport runways, obstruction lights help identify potential barriers such as buildings, trees, or other structures that could interfere with an airplane’s take-off or landing procedures.

Off-airport obstruction lights can serve a variety of purposes. They are often used to indicate the location of tall objects such as towers or antennas, to prevent collisions with aircraft and to ensure that these obstacles are visible in low light conditions.

Overall, obstruction lights play a critical role in ensuring the safety of pilots, passengers, and those who work with or near airports and other tall structures.
