Pilot Report (PIREP)

A Pilot Report (PIREP) is an aviation term that refers to a detailed report submitted by pilots about the meteorological conditions encountered during their flight. The report includes information such as cloud coverage, visibility, icing, turbulence, and precipitation. PIREPs are essential in providing accurate and up-to-date information to other pilots, air traffic controllers, and meteorologists in order to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel. In addition to weather conditions, PIREPs may also include information about equipment malfunctions, air traffic issues, and other relevant observations. The data gathered from PIREPs is used to create current aviation weather forecasts and assists in decision-making for flight planning and routing. PIREPs can be submitted directly to air traffic control or through an automated system such as the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS).
