Definition of Precision Approach Radar (PAR)

Precision Approach Radar (PAR) is a type of radar system utilized at airports to guide aircraft during the final stages of landing, providing horizontal and vertical guidance. The PAR system operates by emitting a radio signal that is bounced back to the equipment as it strikes the surface of the ground. The radar operator then uses this information to guide the aircraft’s pilot by providing instructions on changes in heading or vertical descent rates in order to keep the aircraft on its intended path. The main purpose of the PAR system is to ensure that the aircraft lands at the correct spot on the runway, ultimately improving safety for all involved in aviation operations.
