Definition of Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM)

The Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) is a global standard that reduces the vertical separation between flight levels (FL) 290 and 410 from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet. This allows for more efficient use of airspace and makes six additional FLs available for operation. RVSM is achieved through the use of highly accurate altimetry systems and rigorous maintenance procedures to ensure the safety and integrity of the airspace. This standard was developed to increase airspace capacity, reduce delays, and decrease fuel burn and emissions from aircraft. In addition to improving efficiency, RVSM also enhances safety by reducing the risk of mid-air collisions and improving overall situational awareness for pilots. The implementation of RVSM has significantly improved the global aviation system, facilitating more efficient and safe air travel for all.
