Registration / Tail Number

Registration / Tail Number is a unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to an aircraft that denotes its nationality and ownership. Typically, it consists of a letter(s) followed by a series of digits or letters. In the United Kingdom, the registration number starts with the letter ‘G’ followed by a hyphen and further four letters assigned by the regulator. For instance, G-STBA. In the United States, the registration number begins with the letter ‘N’ followed by a combination of numbers or letters. For example, N463UA. The purpose of registration numbers is to ensure identification and traceability of an aircraft by its manufacturer, owner, operators, and regulatory authorities. It provides a critical link to the airplane’s maintenance records, accident analysis, and overall airworthiness compliance. Moreover, registration numbers facilitate the tracking of an aircraft’s movement, location, and ownership in both the national and international aviation markets.
