Definition of REIL

REIL, which stands for Runway End Identifier Lights, are a set of lights installed at the end of each runway to assist pilots in identifying the end of the runway during takeoff and landing. These lights are usually installed in pairs and emit white light when approached from the runway threshold and red light when viewed from the runway end. This visual cue helps pilots to correctly align their aircraft for takeoff or landing, particularly in low visibility conditions. REILs can also be used as a backup system in case of a malfunctioning precision approach lighting system (PALS) or visual approach slope indicator (VASI). By providing clear visual cues to pilots, REILs help enhance safety and improve the efficiency of airport operations.
