Definition of RNAV

RNAV stands for Area Navigation and refers to a technique of navigating aircraft over a specific flight path without relying on ground-based navigation aids. The RNAV system uses on-board navigation equipment, such as GPS (Global Positioning System), to determine the aircraft’s location and calculate the desired route.

RNAV enables aircraft controllers to set up routes that are more direct and efficient, which reduces flight time and fuel consumption. This system is particularly useful in congested airspace, where traditional navigation aids cannot provide the necessary accuracy or flexibility.

RNAV systems can be implemented using a variety of navigational devices, including Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), GPS, and VOR/DME (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range/Distance Measuring Equipment). These devices can determine the aircraft’s positioning by using satellite signals, gyroscope, and acceleration sensors.
