Rudder

« Back to Glossary Index

The rudder is a vertical control surface situated at the tail section or empennage of an aircraft. It is usually mounted on the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer or fin and serves as a primary flight control surface responsible for controlling the yaw of the aircraft. Yaw refers to the motion of the nose of the aircraft left or right around its vertical axis. The rudder works by deflecting the airflow over the vertical stabilizer, generating a force that helps to turn the aircraft. The smooth movement of the rudder is controlled by a trim system, which minimizes the force required to hold the rudder in the proper position for various flight conditions. When the rudder is deflected to the left, the aircraft’s nose will turn to the left, and when the rudder is deflected to the right, the aircraft’s nose will turn to the right.
