Semimonocoque

« Back to Glossary Index

Semimonocoque Design: A structural design commonly used in aircraft fuselages that incorporates a substructure of bulkheads and/or formers, along with numerous stringers in order to support the various loads and stresses imposed on the fuselage during flight. This design is unique in that it does not rely solely on either the skin or the substructure to carry the majority of the flight loads. Instead, the skin and the substructure work in tandem, sharing the loads in order to create a more resilient and durable structure. This design is often preferred over the fully monocoque design, as it is less susceptible to damage and can still maintain a light-weight profile. The semimonocoque design has been widely applied in the aviation industry and has contributed to making aircrafts both safer and more efficient.
