Definition of “Slip” in Aviation

Slip is a controlled manoeuvre that involves the sliding and inward pivoting movement of an aircraft. This occurs when a pilot executes a steep turn by rolling the aircraft in one direction with the ailerons and yaws it in the opposite direction with the rudder.

The purpose of a slip is to reduce the amount of lateral space required to execute a turn while maintaining a constant altitude. This is achieved by presenting a larger cross-section of the aircraft to the oncoming air, which creates drag and slows the aircraft. The slip causes the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly but in a controlled manner.

Slips are commonly used during approaches and landings to adjust the aircraft’s position relative to the runway and maintain a proper descent rate. However, slips can also be used for other purposes, such as avoiding obstacles or correcting a bank angle that is too steep.

Pilots must be skilled in executing slips and be aware of the potential risks associated with the manoeuvre, such as overstressing the airframe or losing control of the aircraft. Therefore, slips should only be performed by experienced pilots in appropriate flight conditions.
