Definition of Somatogravic illusion

Somatogravic illusion refers to the erroneous perception of the aircraft being in a nose-up or nose-down attitude caused due to rapid acceleration or deceleration while in flight conditions where visual reference is missing. This can lead to a false sense of orientation and can potentially result in spatial disorientation. The illusion is more common in situations where there is reduced visibility, for example, during night flying or in clouds. In such situations, the pilot may rely more on their vestibular system, which may not provide accurate information due to the sudden changes in acceleration. It is important for pilots to be aware of and understand the somatogravic illusion to avoid it and ensure safe flying. Proper training and equipment such as instruments that provide accurate information and visual references can also help in preventing somatogravic illusion.
