Definition of Spoilers

Spoilers are high-drag devices that can be deployed on aircraft to reduce lift and increase drag. They are typically raised into the air flowing over an airfoil and are commonly used for roll control on some aircraft. By deploying spoilers on both wings at the same time, the aircraft is able to descend without gaining speed. Spoilers are also commonly used to shorten the ground roll after landing, by reducing the lift generated by the wings and increasing the amount of drag acting on the aircraft. Overall, spoilers play an important role in the safe and efficient operation of many types of aircraft.
