Definition of SQUAWK in Aviation Communication

SQUAWK is a four-digit code assigned to an aircraft by air traffic control (ATC) for identification purposes during communication between the pilot and ATC. This code is unique to each flight and helps ATC quickly identify and track the aircraft.

In case of emergencies, SQUAWK codes play a critical role in notifying ATC. Hijack situations are identified with the code 7500, while radio failures are signalled with 7600. General emergencies are indicated with 7700. When any of these codes are activated, the pilot is notifying ATC of an emergency and requires immediate assistance.

SQUAWK” can also refer to the act of initiating a specific code on a transponder, which is a device that automatically transmits information about the aircraft’s position, altitude, and velocity to ATC. The term “SQUAWK” is a generic term for any code displayed on a transponder, which enhances communication and helps ensure the safety of air traffic.
