Definition of “SSR”

SSR, which stands for Secondary Surveillance Radar, is a system used in air traffic control to enhance the accuracy of radar detection by providing additional information about each aircraft. SSR operates by transmitting signals to an aircraft that require the aircraft to provide a return signal with additional information about its identity and altitude.
