Definition of “SSR

SSR, which stands for Secondary Surveillance Radar, is a system used in air traffic control to enhance the accuracy of radar detection by providing additional information about each aircraft. SSR operates by transmitting signals to an aircraft that require the aircraft to provide a return signal with additional information about its identity and altitude. This allows air traffic controllers to identify and track aircraft more accurately and efficiently, especially when flying in crowded airspace or in low-visibility conditions. The use of SSR has significantly improved the safety and efficiency of air traffic control by enabling faster and more accurate response to potential conflicts between aircraft.
