Definition of “Stabilator

A stabilator is a control surface on an aircraft that functions as a combination of the horizontal stabilizer and the elevators. It allows for the entire horizontal stabilizer to move, controlling the pitch of the aircraft. Unlike traditional horizontal stabilizers and elevators which are separate, a stabilator is a single-piece surface that pivots around a central hinge point. This design improves the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft, increases its stability, and allows for easier control during flight maneuvers. The stabilator is typically found on smaller aircraft, such as light planes and general aviation aircraft, and is a common feature in many modern designs. Overall, the stabilator contributes significantly to the safe and efficient operation of an aircraft.
