Static pressure

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition of Static Pressure:

Static pressure refers to the force applied by still or non-moving air on the aircraft’s surface, measured perpendicular to the plane. This type of pressure is essential in determining the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft. It is usually measured using a static port, which is a small opening in the aircraft’s surface that is designed to capture the pressure of the surrounding air. Static pressure is affected by several factors, including altitude, temperature, and air density. Understanding static pressure helps pilots to maintain safe flight operations as they must continually monitor the changes in static pressure readings during flight.
