Tactical Air Navigation System (TACAN)

Tactical Air Navigation System (TACAN) is classified as an UHF navigation system, which is designed to provide aircraft with precise and real-time information on both distance and bearing. TACAN works by utilizing signals from ground-based navigation stations, whereby an aircraft’s receiver will determine the bearing and distance of the station and then display this information to the pilot. This navigation system is fundamental to military aviation as it provides pilots with the ability to navigate their aircraft with pinpoint accuracy and more effectively carry out complex tactical maneuvers.
