Definition of TAWS

Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) is a safety system designed for use in aircraft that alerts pilots to a potential collision with the ground or terrain. The system uses GPS technology and digital mapping to provide real-time information about the aircraft’s relationship to the terrain. TAWS provides pilots with a warning if the aircraft is in danger of colliding with the ground, enabling them to take immediate action to prevent an accident. This is especially useful in conditions of limited visibility or when flying in mountainous terrain. With its ability to detect and warn of potential terrain obstacles, TAWS is an essential safety feature that helps prevent accidents and reduces the risk of airborne collisions.
