Definition of Torque

Torque is a physical quantity that refers to a force that creates or tries to create rotation. It is characterized by its ability to cause a twist in an object, producing a rotational motion.

There are different manifestations of torque, such as resistance to turning or twisting. This often occurs when a force tries to change the direction of a rotating object, causing a counteractive force to emerge. In aeronautics, torque can also refer to the tendency of an aircraft to turn (roll) in the opposite direction of rotation of the engine and propeller. This phenomenon occurs because the force generated by the propeller opposes the rotation of the aircraft. Similarly, in helicopters with a single, main rotor system, the tendency of the helicopter to turn in the opposite direction of the main rotor rotation is also a manifestation of torque.
