Definition of Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance System (TCAS)

The Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is an airborne system that operates independently from the ground-based Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. This system is developed by the FAA with the aim to increase flight deck awareness of proximate aircraft and to serve as a “last line of defense” for the prevention of midair collisions.

The TCAS continuously monitors the airspace nearby and provides the flight crew with alerts of conflicting traffic in the vicinity. It uses radar technology to detect potential collision threats and provides corresponding advisories to the flight crew. The TCAS can also execute automatic collision avoidance maneuvers in certain situations, informing the flight crew of the necessary action to be taken.

The system is mandatory on most commercial and military aircraft and is considered a key component of the modern aviation safety system. TCAS has significantly contributed to the reduction of midair collisions and has become an essential element of aviation safety worldwide.
