Trim Tab Definition

A trim tab is a small appendage attached to a larger control surface that helps balance and modify control inputs during flight. It is used to counteract the aerodynamic forces on the larger control surface, ensuring the plane remains stable and maneuverable in the air.

Essentially, a trim tab acts as a secondary control surface, adjustable in-flight to modify and balance control force inputs. It is hinged, allowing it to move independently of the larger control surface, and is adjusted by the pilot to achieve the desired balance and stability for the plane.

Without trim tabs, the aerodynamic forces on the larger control surfaces could cause the plane to become unbalanced, making it difficult or impossible to control. Trim tabs therefore play a critical role in ensuring the safety and stability of an aircraft during flight.
