Definition of VEF

VEF stands for Velocity Essential for Flight. It refers to the calibrated airspeed that a multi-engine aircraft needs to maintain after one engine fails, allowing it to continue flying safely. At this speed, the aircraft can maintain level flight with the remaining engine and other associated safety equipment, such as its airframe, hydraulics, and electrical systems.

In other words, VEF is the minimum velocity required to sustain stable flight in the event of a critical engine failure. Pilots must know and abide by this speed to ensure the safety of the crew and passengers on board. It is crucial that pilots not go below the VEF during takeoff, climb, or any other critical flight phase, as doing so could result in a loss of control or even a catastrophic crash.

The VEF takes into account several factors, such as the aircraft’s weight, altitude, temperature, and environmental conditions. It is calculated during flight planning and is included in the aircraft’s flight manual. Pilots should always review this information before each flight to ensure adherence to the VEF.
