Vertical Speed

« Back to Glossary Index

Vertical speed refers to the rate at which an aircraft is ascending or descending measured in feet or meters per minute. It plays a crucial role in ensuring safe and efficient air travel. During takeoff, vertical speed is typically in the range of 1000 to 3000 feet per minute. As the aircraft gains altitude, the vertical speed decreases until it reaches the desired cruising altitude. During descent, the vertical speed is typically slower, with speeds ranging from 600 to 800 feet per minute. Accurate monitoring and management of vertical speed are vital to maintain the aircraft’s altitude and trajectory, proper flight planning, and in-flight safety. The ground control team and the pilot need to carefully analyze and adjust the vertical speed to ensure optimal flight performance and minimize turbulence and other mid-air disturbances.
