VFR Definition

Visual Flight Rules (VFR) refer to the set of guidelines which govern the rules and regulations for conducting flight operations reliant upon visual references. VFR can best be described as the set of rules pilots follow when flying outside of controlled airspace. These guidelines include minimum cloud clearances, distances from landmarks and approaches to large bodies of water. Pilots are required to have excellent visibility in order to observe the surroundings and avoid collisions.

VFR flights are enjoyed by many pilots, as they provide a sense of freedom and the ability to navigate off the beaten path. However, flying under VFR can limit flights to daytime hours and requires particular consideration of weather patterns, terrain and other flight considerations.
