Definition of VMC

Visual meteorological conditions (VMC) consist of weather conditions that allow pilots to fly aircraft by relying solely on visual references such as the ground, surrounding landscape, and air traffic. Specifically, VMC refers to conditions in which visibility equals or exceeds the minimum requirements set by local aviation authorities, and where clouds and other atmospheric phenomena do not limit visibility or pose a significant risk to aircraft operations.

In order to operate in VMC, pilots must maintain a minimum control airspeed (VMC) which is the lowest flight speed at which a light, twin-engine aircraft can be safely controlled in the event of engine failure. This speed is reached when one engine suddenly becomes inoperative, and the remaining engine is at takeoff power. VMC is a critical safety factor in aviation, as it ensures that pilots can maintain control of their aircraft and respond effectively to emergency situations.
