Definition of VOR

VOR, or Very High Frequency Omni Directional Range, is a navigation system used by pilots to determine their precise location and direction in the air. It works by transmitting radio signals from ground-based stations that are picked up by the VOR receiver in the pilot’s aircraft.

The VOR system provides the pilot with a 360-degree radial reading, allowing them to determine their current position and the direction they need to travel to reach their destination. By using VORs throughout their flight, pilots can create a precise flight plan and stay on course, even in poor visibility conditions.

VORs are an essential part of modern aviation and are still widely used today, but they are being gradually replaced by GPS-based systems. Despite this, VORs remain an important backup navigation tool and are still required for some aircraft operations.
