VY – Definition

VY is the airspeed that enables an aircraft to climb the most altitude within a specific time frame. It is also commonly referred to as the best rate-of-climb speed.

The VY speed is usually determined during the aircraft’s certification process and is typically stated in the flight manual. It is calculated by finding the speed that results in the highest climb gradient, which refers to the altitude gain per unit of horizontal distance traveled.

By maintaining VY, the aircraft will climb at its maximum rate and reach its desired altitude quickly. However, it is important to note that flying at VY requires careful attention and precise control, as any deviation can result in a significant decrease in altitude gain.

Therefore, VY is an essential concept for pilots to understand and properly execute when climbing to their desired altitude.
