Definition of Wing Root

The wing root on a fixed-wing aircraft refers to the section of the wing that is closest to the fuselage. As the primary point of attachment, it also bears the highest bending forces during flight and landing. To reduce interference drag between the wing and the fuselage, wing roots commonly have fairings. These fairings can help smooth the airflow and reduce drag, thereby improving the aircraft’s overall efficiency. Conversely, the wingtip is the opposite end of the wing from the wing root, and is typically designed with different features to promote optimal lift and drag characteristics.
