YAW

« Back to Glossary Index

Yaw: The horizontal rotation of an aircraft around its vertical axis, causing the aircraft to move from side to side. This motion is controlled by adjusting the aircraft’s rudder, located on the vertical stabilizer. Yaw is the aircraft’s side-to-side movement, while pitch and roll describe the front-to-back and side-to-side motions, respectively. The vertical axis of an aircraft is a line that passes through the aircraft’s center of gravity and is perpendicular to the aircraft’s wingspan. Yaw affects the direction in which the aircraft is pointing and is significant in flight, navigation, and landing. The rudder is the primary control surface for yaw, although other factors such as wind conditions and engine thrust also play a role.
