Zone of confusion

« Back to Glossary Index

Zone of Confusion: The volume of airspace surrounding a VOR station where the accuracy of the navigation signal is compromised due to the vertical position of the aircraft relative to the station. The Zone of Confusion occurs above the VOR station and results in the VOR’s needle deviating from the correct reading, creating errors in the aircraft’s navigation. The size of the Zone of Confusion depends on factors such as altitude, distance from the station, and the specific VOR station’s design. Pilots must take the Zone of Confusion into account when navigating using VORs to ensure that their navigation is accurate and safe.
