Definition of ADF

The ADF, or Automatic Direction Finder, is a navigation tool used by aircraft pilots to determine their direction relative to a radio station on the ground. It works by receiving radio signals transmitted by the ground station and calculating the direction from which they are coming. This information is then displayed on the aircraft’s instruments, allowing the pilot to steer the plane in the direction of the radio station. The ADF is a valuable tool in situations where other navigation tools, such as GPS, may not be available or reliable. It is particularly useful for navigating over remote or mountainous areas, where landmarks may be few and far between. The ADF has been an essential instrument in aviation history and continues to be an important part of navigation technology today.
