Altimeter

« Back to Glossary Index

Altimeter is a crucial cockpit instrument utilized to determine an aircraft’s altitude above the mean sea level (MSL). This instrument comprises an aneroid barometer that calculates the altitude of an aircraft by analyzing the current air pressure. It is a pressure-sensing device that offers real-time data on the aircraft’s height, allowing pilots to maintain the aircraft’s safe distance from the ground. With this flight instrument, pilots can determine the plane’s vertical position and adjust its upward or downward movement to fly safely and efficiently. An aneroid barometer calibrated to indicate altitude based on the air pressure measured at a given point is the core of the altimeter. The altimeter is an indispensable tool for pilots, enabling them to navigate accurately and avoid collisions.
