Approach control

« Back to Glossary Index

Approach Control: The air traffic control unit responsible for managing the arrival and approach phase of aircraft that are operating under instrument flight rules or, in certain cases, under visual flight rules. Approach control controllers use radar and other advanced equipment to manage and direct aircraft as they approach the end of their flight and prepare for landing. They work closely with other air traffic control units to ensure a safe and efficient flow of air traffic, providing pilots with clear instructions and flight paths to follow. The primary goal of approach control is to maintain separation between aircraft and ensure that each flight arrives at its destination safely and on time. Handing off the aircraft to the local controller is one of the final steps in the approach control process, and it ensures that the aircraft is properly managed throughout its entire flight.
