What is Class B airspace?

Class B airspace is the designated area from the surface to 10,000 feet MSL surrounding the busiest airports in terms of IFR operations or passenger numbers. Each Class B airspace is unique and tailored to fit the specific needs of the airport, typically consisting of a surface area and two or more layers. The purpose of Class B airspace is to contain all published instrument procedures once an aircraft enters the airspace. All aircraft operating in the Class B airspace require an ATC clearance and will receive separation services within the airspace.
