Compass locator

« Back to Glossary Index

Compass Locator: A radio beacon that operates on low or medium-frequency and consumes minimal power, installed at the location of the outer or middle marker of an Instrument Landing System (ILS). The primary purpose of the Compass Locator is to provide pilots with additional navigational cues while approaching a runway for landing. The radio signal emitted by the Compass Locator can be picked up by the onboard receiver in the aircraft and used to determine the position of the aircraft relative to the ILS approach path. This provides valuable information, especially in cases where visual cues may be limited due to poor weather conditions or night-time landings. The Compass Locator is one of the key components of the ILS system, which facilitates accurate and safe aircraft landings.
