Crew resource management (CRM)

« Back to Glossary Index

Crew resource management (CRM) is a team management approach applied in the flight deck environment to optimize human/machine interface and interpersonal activities, ensuring safe flight operation. Formerly known as cockpit resource management, CRM programs evolved to include not only flight crews but also other groups involved in the decision-making process, such as dispatchers, cabin crewmembers, maintenance personnel, and air traffic controllers. CRM emphasizes effective use of all available resources, including human resources, hardware, and information, to achieve safe flight operations. This management approach is relevant to all types of aircraft, from general aviation to larger commercial aircraft.
