Definition of Density Altitude

Density altitude refers to the altitude expressed in terms of air density above the mean sea level. This altitude is calculated by adjusting the pressure altitude for the impact of non-standard temperature. In simple terms, it is a measure of the potential performance of an aircraft or engine in a specific weather condition. The density altitude is crucial in aviation since it affects the power output, lift, drag, and other factors that influence aircraft performance. It is particularly relevant when an airplane is taking off or landing on a runway, as the density altitude can affect the length of the runway required for takeoff or landing. Therefore, pilots must account for the density altitude when planning their flights and deciding on takeoff and landing procedures. The term “decision altitude” is sometimes used as a synonym for density altitude, but it refers specifically to the altitude at which a pilot must make a decision during an instrument approach.
