Flight Service Station (FSS)

A Flight Service Station (FSS) is a vital air traffic facility that provides a wide range of services to support pilots and ensure their safety in flight. These services include pilot briefing, en route communications, and providing VFR search and rescue services. FSS also assists lost aircraft and those in emergency situations, relays ATC clearances, originates NOTAMs, broadcasts aviation weather and NAS information, receives and processes IFR flight plans, and monitors NAVAIDs.

At selected locations, FSSs also provide En route Flight Advisory Service (Flight Watch), take weather observations, issue airport advisories, and advise Customs and Immigration of transborder flights. FSS operates as an FAA facility for relaying communications, furnishing weather and safety information to pilots, processing flight plans, and receiving VFR position reports.

In short, FSS plays a crucial role in the aviation industry by providing essential services to ensure that pilots and their aircraft operate safely and efficiently.
